“When you go to the limit of nothingness,
something beyond human knowledge is born”
MONOLITH is a wristwatch supervised by architect Katsufumi Kubota,
who is active in Japan and abroad as a pioneer of minimalism.
Every time you behold that refined presence,
your heart feels deeply fulfilled.
The minimalism I aimed for in <MONOLITH> is not merely about eliminating excess to achieve simplicity. The great architectural masterpieces I have visited evoke a sense of calm and vitality when I immerse myself in their minimal spaces. Particularly in traditional Japanese architecture, which can be described as simple, there is a beauty that harmonizes the human spirit with nature. I believe that is the true power of minimalism.
Through these experiences, what I have cultivated as an architect can also be applied to watch design. When one reaches a state of emptiness, something beyond human understanding is born. I aspire for <MONOLITH> to be an object that invigorates the spirit every time it catches the eye. I believe this can be a catalyst for a richer life.
The ancient Roman architect Vitruvius stated in his work "De Architectura" that making a clock is a task for architects. This was because sundials of that time could only be created by architects well-versed in mathematics, structure, and the natural sciences. This is where my desire to design watches originated.
